What to expect from your Design Sprints with UserActive

What to Expect?

If you’re running a design sprint or working with UserActive for a design sprint you might want to know what to expect, and how to get the most out of the process. In this video, I’ll be discussing how we run design sprints and what to expect if you work with us.

Why do a Design Sprint?

Before we start any design sprint there are three things we need to be clear on:

  1. The reason for the designs – I.e You’re launching a new product, or you have an existing product with a specific challenge, such as a dated interface or you’re struggling with upgrade conversions.
  2. The desired outcome
  3. The scope – What exactly are we designing?

We tend to break down our design sprints into either UX or UI design sprints. The focus is different for each. We’re either improving functionality and usability, or we’re creating a beautiful and intuitive interface. Here is the typical layout of our sprints.

Kick-off meeting

We tend to have a kick-off meeting, wherein we share a project Gantt and we set dates for design presentations and reviews.

Design work and reviews

Kick-off

The kick-off is followed by 3 phases of design work as well as 3 reviews. During this phase our customers only really need to get involved for a few key reasons:

  • Information we need about content or data
  • Questions we have about content or specific functionality

At this point you don’t need to do anything, we’re just working internally on the designs.

First design review

At the first design review, we present our progress. The first design presentation shows the direction of our designs and we gather feedback from our customers, while also providing advice and suggestions on how to address designs.

Second design review

The second design phase is where we are tying in any feedback or correcting course on anything. We follow the same process as before by presenting the design works in the flow of a user journey and then we have a discussion at the end.

Third design review

On our final design review we will be presenting what would be the finished design layouts. At this point, they look absolutely stunning and are now ready for the development team. In this session, we often suggest having a developer present, if they weren’t present during the previous phases. At this review, we either do the development hand-off or we set a final call after this to provide everything developers might need.

So there you have it, that’s what’s involved in our design sprints at UserActive. We adhere closely to our process because we know it delivers the best possible experience for our customers while ensuring that we deliver our highest quality design work and achieve desired outcomes for the project.
